Learn How to Install VMware Workstation Player on Ubuntu 20.04 | 18.04

This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to install VMware Workstation Player on Ubuntu 20.04 | 18.04.

VMware Workstation Player is a free ( for personal use only) virtualization solution that enables users to create and run multiple guest machines simultaneous on a single host computer.

Although VMware Workstation Player is free for personal use only, it’s not an opensource project. If you’re looking for an opensource virtualization software, then you might want to try VirutalBox.

If you’re going to use VMware Workstation Player in a commercial environment, you will have to purchase a license.

When you’re ready to install, follow the steps below:

For better performance, your system must meet the following requirements:

  • 1.3GHz or faster 64-bit CPU.
  • 2 GB RAM memory minimum/ 4GB RAM or more recommended.

Step 1: Install Needed Packages

Before VMware Workstation Player, you must install some required Ubuntu packages.

To do that, run the commands below

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wget gcc build-essential linux-headers-generic linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Step 2: Download VMware Workstation Player

After installing the packages above, go and download VMware Workstation Player from its download page below

You may use the commands line to download and install it… Run the commands below to download and install VMware Workstation Player…

cd /tmp
wget --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:75.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/75.0" https://www.vmware.com/go/getplayer-linux

Step 3: Install VMware Workstation Player

After downloading above, run the commands below to install VMware Workstation Player….

chmod +x getplayer-linux
sudo ./getplayer-linux

When Ubuntu 20.04, the installation will be run non-interactively. This means, you won’t have to complete an installation wizard.

You will get a successful message similar to the one below:

Extracting VMware Installer…done.
Installing VMware Player 15.5.2
Configuring…
[######################################################################] 100%
Installation was successful.

After the installation above, go and launch VMware Workstation Player from the Activities Dashboard.

When you to, it will launch a wizard to complete the setup

When the wizard starts, it will prompt you to accept “VMWARE END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT

Accept the license terms to continue

Accept to update on start and continue

Skip the license key page to use the product for non-commercial use…. If you’re going to be using it in a commercial environment, you should purchase a licence key and enter it here or do it after installtion the program….
